When I was in the classroom, and even now as I tea

When I was in the classroom, and even now as I teach my son, I am always focused on what I want my learners to walk away with. I craft my lessons with the goal of guiding them in the direction I hope they'll go after my lesson has ended. As it pertains to American history, with Black people as a focus, my goal is never for students to simply learn that Black people were enslaved. The end. How sad.
I want them to know that though Black people were enslaved, they resisted. I want them to know that though they were oppressed, they stood up for themselves. They boycotted. They peacefully protested. They violently protested. They forced white people to change racist laws. They took up space that they deserved. They organized and they marched and we still do today. Enslavement and oppression will never be the center of my lesson. It's not the only aspect I want my kids to focus on. I want them to know that even with all the odds stacked against us, we survived. We escaped. We helped others. We loved and had families. We wrote books. We were innovative. We created. We shined. We painted. We went to space. We broke barriers that should have never been there. We told our stories and we passed our energy down to the next generation to keep on doing the same.

So often, when I see a book that is representating

So often, when I see a book that is representating a marginalized group of people in a beautiful way, I see teachers in the comments talking excitedly about how beneficial it would be specifically for their students of color to see themselves. And this is so true! It is beneficial! But I have NEVER seen a teacher say, "I have a class of all white students that absolutely need to see others represented this way." It is critical that white children don't only see themselves as the main character in reading, science, social studies, and math lessons year after year. I know people like to claim that children don't see color, but they most certainly do. They can even hold racist thoughts and have racist actions. (Research it on your own time. It's fascinating and scary.) If every character in every book and TV show they consume was suddenly all Black, all Indigenous, all Latinx, or all Asian... they would notice. You would notice. We do see color and representation matters. You are doing white children a disservice by not enriching their lives with books and lessons that share the stories of everyone and their important contributions as well as their struggles and as a direct result you are also doing BIPOC children who encounter these white children a disservice as well.

@teachforthechange Some of my DMs really stress me out. The lengths people will go to defend white supremacy, while still maintaining they aren't racist is puzzling to me.
It's not a big deal to who? You don't see the racism that you partake in daily as an issue because you don't think of it as racist (even though it is). Because it's the level of racism you're comfortable with and willing to commit, you think it's okay for everyone... after all, you're a "good person", right? It's not harming you directly, so you find ways to excuse it even for children. It's "fun", so it must be good for students. It's what you've always done. Some are even annoyed that "everything has to be about race" and just want to be able to ignore it all.
Teachers, caregivers, & admin, I hope you'll analyze and read about the anti-Black and anti-Asian depictions and words in Seuss's work.
Trust me, I loved him too before I knew of his racist past.
I don't want to hear that he was a product of his time. He died in 1991. Racism has been wrong in every time period. Stop excusing it.
I don't want to hear that Horton Hears a Who was his apology. He was a writer. He could have written an actual apology.
Reflect about why learning a childhood favorite was racist makes you want to defend and excuse their racist actions instead of just condemning them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I do not value rhymes over racism. Ending Black History Month by celebrating a racist, white man is something that needs to stop. If he's in your classroom, how and in what capacity? How does it serve all children?

Teachers, you can send articles to your teammates. Admin, you can make anti-racist instruction a priority at your sites by sending out information to your staff and also prioritizing this when you are hiring educators. Caregivers, you can speak up when you see that your schools are planning events. It's harmful for all students.
