Description

It’s winter in the United States. Polar bears, geese, snow, and arctic foxes come to mind, but this is not your average unit! This unit was designed with global themes in mind! Throughout this resource, you will teach economics, history, science, geography, and sociology! We hope you enjoy this unit as much as we do!

The topics that we cover include:

S.T.E.M: Sled dogs were used in Arctic regions for hunting and to send mail, medicine, and items between villages. Today sled dogs are used for fun and for hunting. Each year in Alaska a race between sled dogs is held. It is called the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It was created to remember the sled dog culture and to save Alaskan huskies which haven’t been used as much since the invention of snowmobiles. Can your students create a sled that can go the fastest AND carry the most cargo?

Sociology: Wildlife biologists are animal experts. They often use tags to keep track of animals, but are these tags helpful or hurtful? Learn all about animal tagging with this study!

Economics: How do zoos make money? Did you know they can’t buy or sell their animals? Your students can create and manage the money for their own zoo.

Geography: Is the Earth getting warmer? Yikes! It is! Your students can find out why that’s a problem for polar bears and other winter animals. They’ll find out how they can try to stop it.

History: Penguins lost the ability to fly eons ago, and scientists may have finally figured out why. A new study suggests that getting off the ground eventually just took too much effort for birds that were becoming expert swimmers. Your students will learn about the history of penguins.

Make SOCIAL STUDIES important again!
