Decoding and encoding should go hand in hand! These activities were created to help your students strengthen their reading and spelling skills simultaneously.
These sheets will allow your students to work within a word family. They will practice sounding out the words and reading them & then saying the words and using their letter/sound knowledge to spell them.
Introduce the word family to your students. Model how to sound out and read words within this word family. Model how to spell words within this word family.
Don’t be afraid to include nonsense words. When reading or spelling words.
Model how you can “tap” the sounds out for each sound you hear. Model writing down a letter (or letters) to correspond with each sound that you say.
The Show What You Know page should be used to test students on any words within the word family (nonsense words included). Students should be able to transfer their decoding and encoding skills.
Have fun teaching and learning!
