Read Across America should be a time when we do just that- read stories that represent America. We should seek to put stories in front of our students that build community, prioritize inclusiveness, teach empathy, cultivate cultural intelligence, inspire young citizens, and uplift marginalized communities. In order to do this, a wide variety of books from various authors are needed.

We feel it is inappropriate for children to celebrate Dr. Seuss and his images without context or pointing out that the stereotypes are hurtful and harmful for the students they are supposed to represent, as well the students who begin to form biases and stereotypes based on what they see.
