BIPOC experience racism in some form on an almost

BIPOC experience racism in some form on an almost daily basis. It is harmful and exhausting to navigate. To pretend as though you are the authority on another person's experience and comment on what is or isn't racism (no matter your intent) is harmful. If you claim to be an ally, and a BIPOC actually trusts you enough to share an experience with you, don't gaslight them. Believe them and then use your privilege to do something about it if you can. At some point, the "listening and learning" crew needs to begin to advocate consistently, take action often, and hold people accountable as needed. At some point you may find the need to return to a state of listening and learning (if you find that your "help" is actually causing BIPOC more harm), but that shouldn't be your perpetual state.

example: a person of color shares her experiences with racism and the person they are talking to says "are you sure that's what happened?" "Karen has never spoken to me like that." "I don't think they meant it that way." "People have been rude to me too." "You guys make everything about race."

Among other things, April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Teachers have so much on their plates (right now and always) and one important role we have is being in the position to support our students' social and emotional learning. @getyourteachon on has partnered with Prevent Child Abuse America and will be donating $5 for each charity tee sold. Prevent Child Abuse America is the nation’s oldest and largest organization committed to preventing child abuse and neglect before it happens. These tees go on sale, Monday, April 12th.
We can't teach students until we really connect with them. Positive relationships with kids are key.

I read these words from @renieddolodge years ago. They really resonated me, but I wasn't quite "there" yet. I still had the energy and desire to educate even the most racist of racists and show them a different way. I still felt like going back and forth with people was a good use of my time. I didn't mind having conversations with friends and teachers that just needed that grace they are always asking for and guidance about how their actions were racist and complicit.
I was motivated by the kids I teach and my newborn baby. I wanted to impact people that could one day impact them. But the more I engaged, the more tired I became. The more I engaged, the more I got hurt. The more I engaged, the more defensive they became. The more I engaged, the more hate I received. The more I engaged, the more I lost friends, "followers", and respect for people I once viewed in a different light. And... I'm thankful for it it. It brought me to where I am now. God allowed this for me to grow and I count it all joy. (James 1:2)
As I read Reni's words again today I felt seen and understood. I am "there" now.
When your ignorant, privileged, or hurtful comment (no matter how well Intentioned) doesn't get responded to or even gets deleted, this is why. It's not that I can't answer you. It's that I won't.
When your DM goes unanswered, and you are swiftly blocked and then you DM from a different account yelling about why you were blocked and spewing hate, this is why.
BIPOC friends, I'm sure some parts of this post resonated with you as well whether you are "there" yet or not.
