Image ID: A white square that says, "When you're racist, learning how to become anti-racist feels inappropriate, comfortable, and wrong.
When people are challenged to be anti-racist, it can feel like a personal attack. It can feel like everything you thought you knew about the world no longer makes sense. It can feel like people are just being too sensitive or they are out to make you feel bad about yourself. But... that's on you. Anti-racist work is what it is. Reflect on your immediate fragility, defensiveness, or anger and get to the root of the problem. Reflect on your ability to think that you actually have no work to do at all because you "don't see color" or "treat everyone the same."
People will say that kids are too young to learn about racism, (saying it's inappropriate) but then say, "They're just kids!" after they do or say something racist. Wasn't the BIPOC child they harmed just a kid too?
Too many people are too worried about not being labeled as a racist than actually doing the work to be anti-racist. Too many people are caught up in performative ways to distance themselves from racism and white supremacy than really digging in and examining how they might contribute to the problem and uphold the systems.
White supremacy is not the shark. Always remember that it is the water. How long have you been soaking?

Therapy sessions are still going strong. Today my therapist said something to me that I wanted to share with my BIPOC people regarding our never-ending battle with racists. "Don't let racism rob you of you peace. That's on them. Don't let that guide how you move."
She said this because told her that I needed to rearrange my schedule, but feared being perceived as lazy or unprofessional. It's hard not to feel judged based on skin color when we have a lifetime of experiences (our own and those of friends and family) that lets us know exactly how we will be prejudged more often than not. But I'm working to not let that dictate how I move in this world. A racist person will hold their racist views regardless of how hard I work or how professional I strive to be. It's not my responsibility or burden to change them.

Dr. King believed that Black lives matter. The same people that critique and hate the BLM movement are the same people who try weaponize Dr. King against Black people. You have people and activists carrying on his work today and you're against them, yet you love Dr. King and make your yearly posts about love driving out hate? If the only time you quote Dr. King or post about racism is to get others to stop talking about it in a way that makes you uncomfortable, you're doing it wrong. I'm looking at you white teacher that tells people what Dr. King would and wouldn't like to see "his people" doing today. I'm also looking at you white teacher who just has their students make an MLK craft and then dares to feel like they've truly done all they can do to address racism.You know there's a problem when you have to worry about what parents/caregivers, co-workers, admin, or your district will say if they find out you've been teaching kids that racism still persists today and is wrong.
75% of Americans disapproved of Dr. King at the time of his death. How did the people that raised you feel about him? How did the educators K-12+ that shaped you feel about him? When you're being honest with yourself, how do you truly feel about him?
