Whenever I'm offered information that shifts my perspective, my go-to phrase is, "Oh, I don't think I've ever considered that. Let me read more about it. Thanks for telling me." or even a simple, "That's a good point." What's yours?

In addition to getting kids to read, I'd say writing is another area where I personally see a lot of student growth! I get contacted by many parents and educators asking about the writing they've seen my students or son produce. First, I'd like to put out there to make sure you're never comparing your child or your students to somebody else. Kids can be the same age and have differing abilities and strengths, and that's okay. Helping kids plan out their writing and modeling what that planning/brainstorming time should look like is key! I like showing them that the planning was the heavy lifting and that now they can just use their planning to write some sentences. When I am teaching emerging writers, especially if they aren't confident yet, I don't spend too much time focusing on spelling or writing mechanics. I want kids that realize they can put their ideas into writing and share their thinking with an audience. When I have students that feel too frustrated to get anything out, I ask them what they want to say and we count how many words their sentence contains. (See picture #2) Then I make lines for them and they get to write their words on each line. It helps young writers feel less overwhelmed and gets them to see that the individual words put together make a sentence. I also narrate the skills I see and want to continue seeing: "I see that you started your sentence with a capital letter." "I like the way you used your sounds to help you." "I know your sentence is over because I see you used punctuation." What are your go-to tricks to help struggling writers? (Resources pictured are available in my TpT store. Link in stories.)
